What you know on umbrellas?

Wiki wrote”An umbrella or parasol is a folding canopy supported by wooden or metal ribs that is usually mounted on a wooden, metal, or plastic pole. It is designed to protect a person against rain or sunlight.”

For traditional umbrella, it only works to protect person from rain and the material have fabric, tranparent one. With the development, umbrella or parason also works to protect user from sunlight, this kind umbrella will use special fabric with coating.

Based on it usage, umbrella or parasol also be called sunshade, beach umbrella. And in UK history, Brolly, paraluie, rainshade and gamp also refer to umbrellas.

In below chapters, we will intruce all details for umbrella, including size, fabric, handle, print, packaging and so on.

Chapter 2

Umbrella structure

To support canopy well and work as normal in rainy, windy days, umbrella has main parts like Canopy, frame and handle. Others small parts like end, open cap, tube, runner, sprint, ribs, tibs, pole. If your umbrella need to pass some certificate like ROHS, REACH, you should care on these small parts. Each parts can be found from left pictures.

Frame work to support the canopy and handle will let user to hold it. You will find how to choose umbrella size in the below Chapter.

How to make umbrella?

Have your ever visited umbrella factory? Many people thought umbrella is finished by machine. Actually modern umbrellas are made by a hand-assembly process that, except for a few critical areas, can be done by semi-skilled workers.

The umbrella process is not complex like other electronic products, but some import process will influence the quality. Such as the Cutting, if cut too small then the umbrella will be too much tight and easy to break.

If you are looking for some quality umbrella, you need to care below things:

  1. Logo prints, please do not put the fabric together if the logo is wet.
  2. Before cutting, please double check the umbrella size and use right tools to avoid too small or too large.
  3. If your design need to splicing, sewing process is very important and should pay more attention on this. Otherwise, some places will not show well.
  4. Some factories will use hot melt glue to fix handle, but if high temperature the handle will be easy to take off. If you have met this problem, you can ask supplier to use other glue.

How to check umbrella size?

When you are ready to purchase umbrella, you need to know which size you need it? Usually, there are 3 kinds size like kids umbrella, folding umbrella and golf umbrella. But do you know to measure it?

When you open the umbrella, there are 3 parts including Arc, Radius and open diameter. As habit, US market like to use Arc size and other market prefer radius size.

The size of the umbrella arc means that it needs to be measured from one end of the rib to the other end of the opposite section.

The radius of the umbrella is measured from the top to the end of the umbrella bone, i.e. the length of the umbrella bone.

When you want to measure the diameter, firstly you need to open umbrella. The diameter of an umbrella measures in a straight line from one end of the umbrella to the end in the internal part of the umbrella. It will be smaller than ARC.

Umbrella length means the whole parts of one umbrella, including top, pole and handle.

Umbrellas can be divided into straight and folding umbrellas. A straight umbrella means that it can not foldable. This size determines how the umbrella can be carried and stored. The corresponding folding umbrellas can be divided into 2-fold, 3-fold, 5-fold and 6-fold umbrellas. The smaller the number of folds, the smaller the size of the umbrella, and the easier it is to carry.

You can choose 21inch or 23inch umbrella if for one person usage. 2 person or above 2 person, you can choose a little bigger umbrella like 25inch, 27inch and even 30inch. But in Summer, ladies prefer the mini umbrella of 19inch, as it is only 14cm after folding, easy and convenient to carry.

It is very import to know umbrella size and it helps you know whether it can serves the purpose that you need the umbrella for. With this standard, it can work as a guider when you are ready to purchase umbrellas.

Rain Umbrella or Sun Umbrella

Umbrellas protect us from the wind and rain, and with the advancement of technology, the fabric of umbrellas is gradually improving. In addition to some of our common basic fabrics like pongee, polyester, Oxford cloth, now some new coatings have been developed, such as nano, super water repellent, stain and oil repellent, UV protection and so on. The following will give you a detailed introduction.

Pongee Fabric

Pongee is a type of slub-woven fabric, designed by weaving with yarns that have been spun by varying the tightness of the yarn’s twist at various intervals. In the early 20th century, pongee was an important export from China to the United States. Pongee is still woven in silk by many mills across China, especially along the banks of the Yangtze at mills in Sichuan, Anhui, Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces. Generally it varies in weight from 36 to about 50gm/sq m.

There are some thickness of pongee fabric, like 170T, 190T and 210T. It is mainly made of umbrellas, and some high quality umbrella will be made of 210T pongee fabric. In the past, pongee fabric is only made waterproof. But now, it has made others coating to meet different usage, like Black coating, silver coating, golden coating, Titanium coating and colorful coating to provide UV protection. It was called “Anti UV fabric”. And some can reach UPF 50+ standard.

Polyester Fabric

Polyester fabric is a synthetic woven material and it is known for being durable and relatively inexpensive to produce. Polyester invented in 1941 by British chemists and brought by DuPont to the United States. Polyester rose to prominence in the 1970s as an inexpensive material for suiting and other clothing. Polyester metarial is the most popular human-made fabrics in the world, and one of the most popular synthetic fabrics overall.

Polyester fabric features:
  1. Durable. Polyester fibers are incredibly strong, it means they are not easy to tear, stretch, or pill like cotton or other natural fibers. This strength means polyester clothing can easily handle abrasion from machine-washing and doesn’t require special care. Based on this features, it is popular for outdoor clothing, umbrellas and so on.
  2. Moisture-resistant. Polyester fibers resist liquid droplets, it means that the fabric will wick away moisture rather than soak it up—making it a popular material for outdoor clothing and gear (like tents, mat) that need to keep off rain and precipitation.
  3. Non-biodegradable. Many natural fibers are biodegradable and they will break down over time and avoid clogging up landfills. But polyester doesn’t easily break down and is not typically biodegradable.
Polyester fabric usage:
  1. Outdoor apparel. As we all know polyester fibers are both durable and moisture-resistant, it’s a common choice for outdoor clothing, tents and umbrellas.
  2. Bags and backpacks. Handbags, sports bags, backpacks, school bags are often made from polyester or polyester blends as it’s cheap, durable, and moisture-resistant.
  3. Microfiber items. Polyester and polyester blends are the basic for microfiber fabric. and it is a great for deterring moisture or delicately cleaning glass surfaces.
  4. Upholstery and home furnishings. Except apparel fashion, polyester is also a common choice in interior design and home decor, used for everything from drapery to tablecloths to cheap bed sheets.

Oxford Fabric

Oxford fabric, also known as Oxford spinning, is a versatile and widely used fabric, and is mainly available in the market: overlay, full stretch, nylon, tig and other varieties. Originating in England, the traditional combed cotton fabric named after Oxford University began around 1900.

Oxford fabric features:
  1. Convenient Oxford cloth luggage relative to the hard box is the most obvious structural characteristics of a variety of shapes, to meet the need for frequent use of a variety of flexible access to small objects when traveling.
  2. Wear-resistant, fall-resistant, pressure-resistant Oxford cloth bags because of the Oxford cloth itself strong and tough characteristics, compared to the hard box, the requirements of the environment to be much more relaxed.
  3. Durable Oxford cloth in frequent, long-term use can still maintain the original appearance.

Oxford cloth has a wide range of uses, such as trolley bags, shoulder bags, tents, closets, outdoor umbrellas and other areas. And you can know more from below video.

POE Plastic Material

Clear umbrellas provide a good view when using in the rain as you could see through the transparent canopy.  This kind material we called POE or PVC.

PVC and POE plastic material allow us to make transparent umbrellas. Also, it is easy to work on various pattern and color designs by using it. But for such kind material, it will need higher MOQ to make pattern due to print way problem.

EVA is an opaque plastic material, it is softer than PVC and has a mat surface in the outside.

RPET Material

RPET fabric or Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate is a new reusable and sustainable material on the rise. It is also called Bottle fabric as the material is from bottle. This kind material is biodegradable and they will break down over time and avoid clogging up landfills.

First, to create products from Rpet fabric, we need to source plastic bottles. Next, the bottles are mechanically broken down to melt into tiny flakes. The flakes are then to be spun into yarn. Finally, the yarn is woven into recycled polyester fabric.

Using a sustainable Rpet fabric is a great idea for protecting the place we are living. The energy used to create Rpet fabric is about 33-53% less than what it is to produce virgin polyester. Due to the demand of recycled polyester, we are saving our oceans and landfills from plastic materials, especially water bottles.

From below pictures you can understand how we can make the RPET fabric from bottles.

Chapter 6

Umbrella frame

Umbrella ribs refers to the skeleton which supports the umbrella one by one.
With the development of technology, umbrellas have also changed. From the previous oil paper umbrellas, to a wide variety of umbrellas. With the change of the umbrella surface, the umbrella bone has also changed, the previous umbrella is mostly made of wood, bamboo, later there are some material like metal, fiberglass, aluminium. Steel rib is the strongest and most durable. Metal is hard and not easy to break, windproof. But it is easy to rust over time. Aluminium ribs is very light, but it is weak on windproof. Now many umbrellas are made of fiberglass, firstly the price is not higher. Secondly, it has a good flexibility which make it windproof. If you have enough budget on umbrella project, you can consider fiberglass material.

Umbrella rib is generally 6-8, the most can reach 24 ribs, and it mainly used in the straight umbrella. Sunshade umbrella is generally 6, 7, 8 roots. The more number of ribs, the stronger it is, but also relatively heavy. We mostly use 6 or 8 ribs to make promotional umbrella, but if the budget is too tight we will suggest client consider 7 ribs. Sunshade umbrella will use 6ribs, as the weight will be light and convenient to carry. At the same time, how many ribs of one umbrella it mean how many panels it will have.

Chapter 7

Umbrella handle

The umbrella is a very old invention, which is used by raising it with the hand. Although the main purpose of the umbrella was to keep the rain off, as society has developed, it has become a multifunctional tool, such as an ornament, a walking stick or even a weapon. The handle is an important part of the umbrella, and the shape of its material largely determines whether people will buy it or not.

Here are you will find different material and shapes of handle. But if you did not find the handle you like, you can contact us to make your own handle.

Chapter 8

Umbrella print

With the pursuit of beauty, people have higher requirements for the function of umbrellas. Umbrellas should not only meet the basic functions like wind and rain protection and UV protection, but also meet the requirements of beauty, convenience and fashion, especially some advertising umbrellas.

In order to play a better advertising effect, businesses will design very beautiful patterns to attract others’ attention, which mean it needs higher requirements on umbrella print ways.

In recent years, due to the development of printing technology and umbrella print requirements, more and more printing technology applied to the umbrella. According to the characteristics of different processes, can be divided into silk printing, screen printing, digital printing and heat transfer printing.

The following will introduce the characteristics of various umbrella printing technology and their respective advantages and disadvantages, so that you can choose the right print way when making order.

Silk Print

Silk printing was one of the first processes used in umbrella printing, and is still the dominant process in the market due to its low cost and simplicity.

This print process is relatively simple. Print mould will be made according to the shape of the pattern, then the ink will pass through the small spaces in screen to form patterns on umbrella fabric. This print is suitable for simple logo.

Because it can only print one color at a time, a variety of colors to be overlapped by multiple printing. So the printed pattern color can not be too much, generally one or two colors. At the same time the screen printing ink is relatively thick, it will be easy to break when using, so silk printing is not suitable for large-area printing.

Silk Print Features:

1. Not limited by the size or shape of the substrate.

General printing only can print on the flat surface. But screen printing can not only be printed on a flat surface but also be printed on special shapes of molded objects such as spherical surfaces.

2. Applicable to various types of inks

3. Strong spin resistance

The luster of the printed material can be kept unchanged. (Temperature and sunlight have no effect). This makes it possible to print some self-adhesive without additional lamination and other processes.

4. Flexible and diverse printing methods

5. Can be done by hand, can also be machine.

Screen Printing

If silk printing is suitable for single color and simple pattern color printing, then screen printing is suitable for color large area printing.

Screen printing can print all color patterns through four color overlay. The principle of screen printing is the same as the silk print, also printing a color at a time. But it is not through the mesh permeable ink way, it through the network storage ink and then printed on the paper, screen printing and screen printing printing printing process is very different.

There are a lot of difference between these 2 prints way. Firstly, screen print will print on the paper then transferred to the fabric, rather than directly printed on the fabric like silk print. However, because of the use of biochemical ink, after the transfer is the ink penetration into the fabric, so it will not affect the feeling of the fabric, so it can be applied to a large area of printing.

But the disadvantage of screen printing is that it can not be positioned, and can only print some irregular patterns.

Below prints are made of screen print way.

Digital printing

Digital printing fabric technology is one of the high-tech products. It appeared in the mid-1990s and brought a new concept to the textile print.

Digital printing fabric is the pattern pattern through the digital form of input to the computer, through the computer printing color separation tracing system (cad) editing processing, and then by the computer control micro piezoelectric ink jet nozzle special dye directly into the textile, forming the required pattern.

Digital printing features:
  1. Digital printing is on-demand inkjet, reducing the waste of chemicals and wastewater discharge. Some also called this print way as GREEN PRODUCTION PTINT due to Inkjet low noise, low energy consumption, quiet and clean.

  2. Break the defects on the traditional printing process, simplify the tedious process, it shortens the traditional printing process, improves the order cycle, and reduces the cost of plate making and proofreading.

  3. Wide color gamut, bright and rich color variety, up to more than 10 million kinds, while the traditional printing only 10 kinds.

  4. High precision, clear and delicate images. At present, the resolution of digital printing up to 1440dpi, while the traditional printing process resolution of only 255dpi.

  5. Support small batch production, not limited by the production batch, it can achieve personalized production needs.

Heat transfer printing

Heat transfer printing is an emerging printing process, introduced from abroad but less than10 years.

The process of printing is divided into two major parts: transfer film printing and transfer processing.

Transfer film printing using dot printing (resolution up to 300dpi) and the pattern pre-printed on the surface of the film. The printed pattern is rich, bright colors, varied, small color difference, good reproducibility, it almost keep the same effect of the design pattern requirements.

Transfer processing through the thermal transfer machine once processing (heating and pressure) and it will be transferred on the film on the surface of the exquisite pattern in the product, forming the ink layer and the product surface into one. This print way is realistic, beautiful and greatly improving the grade of the product.

Heat transfer printing is cheap, rich and vivid colors, has been widely used in clothes, cloth bags, hats, pillows, mugs, tiles, watches, umbrellas and other fields. But because the heat transfer printing needs to open the mold, so it will need more higher quantity compare to digital print.
